The agency regulating commercial cannabis cultivators

CalCannabis Cultivation Licensing, one of the three a division of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), oversees licensing and regulating commercial cannabis cultivators in California.

CalCannabis also manages the state’s track-and-trace system, which tracks all commercial cannabis and cannabis products—from cultivation to sale. CalCannabis is organized into two branches: Licensing Branch and Compliance and Enforcement Branch. 

The licensing branch also grants the following annual statewide licenses to cannabis cultivators in California:

    • Specialty Cottage Indoor
    • Specialty Cottage Mixed-Light Tier 1
    • Specialty Cottage Mixed-Light Tier 2
    • Specialty Outdoor
    • Specialty Indoor
    • Specialty Mixed-Light Tier 1
    • Specialty Mixed-Light Tier 2
    • Small Outdoor
    • Small Indoor
    • Small Mixed-Light Tier 1
    • Small Mixed-Light Tier 2
    • Medium Outdoor
    • Medium Indoor
